One Health Approach and zoonosis prevention in fur farms

The Finnish Fur Breeders Association (FIFUR) meet with authorities regularly from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Finnish Food Authority, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and also local health authorities.

FIFUR, together with the authorities, has developed 15 work guidelines for the control of Covid-19 and avian influenza. Guidelines have been exported for use in other countries such as in Poland and Greece. Manuals deal with different biosecurity protective measures applying farm management and environmental, social and governance.

All fur farms in Finland are tested in a rotation of 3-4 week (SARS-CoV-2, avian influenza), in 2024 all negative and corona negative since 2020.

FIFUR and the Finnish Food Authority also have a contingency team that can be activated within 48 hours if the avian influenza or Covid-19 situation requires it.

FIFUR and the University of Helsinki have developed a Covid-19 vaccine for mink. Finnish Food Authority issued the National Usage Permits to FIFUR in the end of 2021 – all breeding female minks in year shift 2021/2022 vaccinated. All required tests proved that the vaccine works well.
